Back from Catalina
We made it back from Catalina. The dry suits were very nice. Lots of great diving. I've uploaded the pics to Snapfish. If you want to see them, email me at my first name (beth) period (.) my last name (brown) at gmail. I'll send you an invite.

Hello, again
Wow! Haven't updated in a while. Let's see. The week after the photodive, we both went on a deep dive. We completed Advanced Open Water - deep, night, nav, and equipment. The night dive was quite fun. The nav dive, not so much. Well, Shane enjoyed it. I could have done without it though. The hole was bad crowded. All of the dives were limited vis. The crawfish were out in full force. We haven't had a chance to dive since then. Next week we are going home for a wedding, and will be getting a couple of dives in off of Pensacola. And then, in July, we are going to Catalina.
In other news, I have knit console covers for our computers, and I am currently in the process of making some dive flag themed pillows.
My post-LASIK vision isn't perfect, and at the end of July I'll be having an enhancement procedure. I'm currently wearing glasses. It was nice to be able to walk into the store, pick out any pair I wanted, and pick them up in an hour! And they were only ~$100!
That's it for now!
Beth!

Photo Dive
I went on a two tank photo dive on Sunday. It was a two tank dive at the Blue Hole in Santa Rosa NM. The first dive, we went to the bottom. The second dive we went to 40 ft. An editor for The Santa Fean (that's Fe-an, as in from Santa Fe) joined us for the first dive. There will be an article in the June issue about diving in the desert. I think I got some good shots. I'll post if any of them came out.

Advanced Open Water
We started Advanced Open Water class this week. It consists of four specialties: Deep, Night/Limited Visibility, Navigation, Equipment. We did Deep and Night last friday, and in two weeks, we do the other two. The class finishes with 6 dives over three days in Blue Hole (or Perch Lake, if it's warm enough). It's been fun, so far. It's harder, as it should be. But it will make the upcoming trip to Cataline a million times more fun. You get 40 more feet of depth, and you get to dive at night! Awesome. Shane has come to the realization that just because he can't dive, doesn't mean that I can't. So I'll be doing a photo dive next week. Should be fun. Our shop does these two tank "intro-to" dives a couple of times a month. I'll finally get to get the camera good and wet!

Woo-hoo
Two great things today: New car and Catalina
How do these relate to diving? The new car is a Ford Escape, a small SUV. Plenty of room for tanks, and the tail gate is at the perfect height for gear donning. And Catalina, well, we're going there in July! For diving! Shane had two root canals last week, so we're out of the water for another month. Going through withdrawal. Oh boy. More later!

First dives since LASIK
We did three dives this weekend - 1 Friday and 2 Saturday. The weather at Santa Rosa was beautiful. A little chill in the breeze. It started snowing a few hours after we left. There was a class from NMSC there on Saturday, so we got to hangout and meet some new people.
First dive was Friday afternoon - Air, 60 ft, 25 mins. I was a little disoriented. With the prescription lenses in my mask, I had such a narrow field of vision that I didn't notice the distortion around the edges. Now that I can see all the way around, it was sort of disturbing. Because of the index of refraction, everything looked curved when I looked to the edges of my mask. After I got used to it, it was really great. We noticed some residents of the Hole that we were not previously aware of: Crawfish! Our next goal is to figure out how to catch some, and have a nice surface interval snack.
Second dive was Saturday morning. We went down with the class, and then did our own thing. Air, 65 ft, 28 minutes. Another good dive, saw more crawfish, got more used to the new vision. I'm getting much better with leaving the wall, which is disturbed Shane. He didn't really like having to chase me around.
Last dive was Saturday afternoon. 33% Nitrox for me, 32% for Shane. 70 feet, 26 minutes. We were also joined by the brother of a guy in the class who was already certified. Shane caught a crawfish by hand. Admittedly, it was a pretty stupid crawfish, but still.
All in all, a good weekend of diving. Saw some snow on the way home.
Next dive will probably be the weekend after Valentine's day. The shop is doing a two tank Search and Recovery dive. It's sort of an "intro to" dive. It will be lead by a dive con (dive master/assistant instructor). The following weekend will likely be a visit to Roswell to dive Bottomless Lake. (Finally, a dive that's not in Santa Rosa!)
Til next time...

LASIK Good!
LASIK was last Friday. I think it went quite well. And I only have to stay out of the water for two weeks! The eyes are still fluctuating, as is to be expected for a few days, but they seem to be leveling out. I haven't been back to work yet, as Shane has been sick and unable to drive. I don't want to get out on the interstate and suddenly not be able to see. I also really can't see well at all at night. I think I'll go to work tomorrow, and just leave before it gets dark. We've also started the southbeach diet, so we'll see how that goes. I really miss the water thiough, it's been over a month since we've been able to dive and it sucks! All that gear sitting in the closet being sad and lonely. Soon, soon, we will get wet again, and it will be good. I think that we will do Blue Hole, then maybe Bottomless in Roswell, and then SLC, but we'll see. Need to make/save some money and earn some vacation first. I just need to get the lenses in my mask switched out to regular lenses and I'll be ready to go.
More later.

In other news...
Our trip we had planned for Salt Lake City to dive seabase and homestead has been postponed. We were planning to go at Valentine's day. But I'm having Lasik on Jan 14. So that would be exactly four weeks after the procedure, a little close. We'll probably go in March. We won't be doing any diving over Christmas either. So this may be the last post for a couple of months.
Merry Christmas!

Level 2!
AFter three dives this weekend, we have reached Level 2 in the SSI scale. First dive was Friday, and an air dive. We went to the bottom of the Blue Hole - 82 ft. I also got my new camera wet! My DCS-phobia was better, too. Lots of fun. Second dive was Saturday morning. 65 ft, more camera fun, air dive. Last dive was Nitrox, 45 ft, more pictures. Sure, taking pictures of goldfish and carp and bubbles and rocks is kind of repetitive, but you can't get better without practice. And without SLR, you have to work a little harder to aim the camera underwater than above water. I'll post some photos, if they are any good, when I get them back. This brings us to a total of 13 dives.

I got a camera!
Our first Christmas gift arrived today. I, I mean we, got a SeaLife Sport diver camera for Christmas from one of Shane's aunts. Woo-hoo! I can't wait to get it wet. Unfortunately, we won't be going diving this weekend, so it's just going to have to wait until next week. Now I just need the dry case, and the macro set, and the external flash...
